Spreading their wings
Hello there. We’re back from our holidays (explaining the gap in posts!) and this weekeneds news is that two of our moot* co-op members are spending weekend in the splendid grounds of Chatsworth House. LittleBarb and Maggie Preston have a stall at the Chatsworth Country Fair – selling jewellery, silk acarves and paintings and prints. If you are visitng the fair go along and see them in the Eden Crafts tent. The fair runs until Sunday afternoon – hope the weather stays fine for them.
Closer to home – next Tuesday is our monthly moot* craft night at The Smithy Studios in Glossop, 7.30 – 9pm. All welcome.
The Wedding Dress That Tells A Story
“A dress that tells a story” is the focus of an exhibition now at the newly opened Smithy Studios in Glossop. The dress has been designed and produced by glossopmoot* member Carol Beckett as part of her recently completed M.A. course at Manchester Metropolitan University.
The dress tells the story of her mother living on Tyneside in the 50’s when shipbuilding was still great and where the ships were literally built at the bottom of the street where Carol grew up. It revolves around the men who worked in the
shipyards all hours of the day and night and the generations of women who helped to keep it all ticking over..
The story is a familiar one and is a testimony to the great wealth generated by the working class in Tyneside just as in Glossop and other now lost industrial heartlands.
The dress is in two parts, the bodice is machine embroidered and incorporates precious vintage fabrics, gold, silver and copper threads, while a length of ragged cotton, trapped between layers of silk organza is painted to show images of the shipyards and women with their children.
Supporting work is also on show, collographic prints, oil paintings, hand embroidery, machine embroidery and ceramics.
The exhibition opens tommorrow ( (Wednesday 10 August) and will run until early September.
The Smithy Studios are at 1 Smithy Fold, Glossop, Derbyshire SK13 6XT and are open Wednesday – Saturday 10am – 5pm.
And while you’re at the Studios check out the Summer Yarn Sale and their autumn workshop programme!
